an apology & a warning.

The Apology
K i'm sorry i haven't been updating and im sorry in advance for posting twice in a day (i hate it when i do this) but i REALLY REALLY don't have the time anymore. DAMN YOU, BEK'S INNER GEEK !!

The Warning
on an irrelevant note...
I AM SICK, SICK, SICK OF HEARING ALL THIS EMPTY TALK.
no, no-one bitched about me.
i am talking about.... Climate Change
bet you didn't see that one coming.

GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL
IT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
NOT TO SOME DISTANT GENERATION WE DON'T QUITE CARE ABOUT
in truth, we are all very selfish people. sure, we may talk about caring for our future greatgrandkids and ensuring they have a better world, but if a problem is affecting us, you can be sure we'll do more than just talk.
the strange thing is, people don't realize that it is affecting us.

our weather is going CRAZY.
there has NEVER BEEN a hurricane in Brazil before.
it has even been said that such a thing was impossible.
As mentioned in The Public Diary, there has been snow in Heathrow and ocean currents are going crazy.
The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.
Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level.
At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles.
Greenland's glaciers are melting into the sea twice as fast as previously believed.

But once more, we don't really care unless these things apply to us...
Miri will be gone in our lifetime, lost to the sea, if we do not take action RIGHT NOW.

These are not simply steps that we can do or should do but rather what we MUST do.
-USE LESS HOT WATER
-TURN OFF ELECTRONIC DEVICES YOU'RE NOT USING
-UNPLUG ELECTRONICS FROM THE WALL WHEN YOU'RE NOT USING THEM (yes, even when turned off, things like hairdryers, cell phone chargers and televisions use energy. In fact, the energy used to keep display clocks lit and memory chips working accounts for 5 percent of total domestic energy consumption and spews 18 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year)
-RECYCLE
-BUY RECYCLED PAPER
-PLANT A TREE(A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%)
-BUY LOCALLY GROWN & PRODUCED FOODS AS WELL AS EAT MORE FRESH FOOD RATHER THAN FROZEN
-EAT LESS MEAT (or, specifically, beef. Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas and cows are one of the greatest methane emitters. Their grassy diet and multiple stomachs cause them to produce methane, which they exhale with every breath)
-REDUCE THE NUMBER OF MILES YOU DRIVE (carpool, walk, public transport...)
-AVOID PRODUCTS WITH ALOT OF PACKAGING

all we have done is talk.
we do school presentations on global warming, we know why its bad and that its happening, we know what we should and shouldn't do... and yet we do nothing.
i sent out a message today about global warming to a bunch of friends. one of the replies i got went along the lines of "why should i do anything? this is where the politicians come in, THEY should be the ones to start something."
this is malaysian mentality at its finest.
the rakyat won't change so the government won't change, and since the government isn't changing, the rakyat won't change either.

change has got to start somewhere with someone.

if we do our part and spread awareness as to how real the situation is, the government will eventually take action.
green energy sources, less deforestation, passing of laws...
all that will come if we do our part.

that same person also said "we're only one person, what could one person possibly do?"
the average american produces 7.5 tons of carbon dioxide. Not in his lifetime, however, but in a YEAR.
asuming this average american lives for an average 70 years... he would be producing 525 tons of carbon dioxide. and thats not including how much natural resources he uses up.
(take the ecological footprint quiz to figure out just how much you use up)

we cannot sit around talking any longer.
